Tokenization can reduce card-data exposure and improve payment operations, but the token strategy matters when an ISV or platform wants to change processors. Provider-specific vaults, token portability, network tokens, lifecycle management, migration rights, data ownership, and contract language can turn a processor breakup into an expensive infrastructure project.

AI agents may change how consumers and businesses shop, compare, select, and pay, but the old payments questions still matter. Agentic commerce will need clear authorization, token controls, user permissions, merchant trust, transaction context, fraud monitoring, dispute evidence, and liability clarity before “the AI did it” becomes the industry’s next favorite excuse.
